Heute vor 211 Jahren, am 19. Juli 1810, starb nach schwerer Krankheit Königin Luise von Preußen, Mutter von Friedrich Wilhelm IV., König von Preußen, und Wilhelm I. – deutscher Kaiser.
Ihr Refugium hatte sie vor den Toren #Potsdam|s auf Schloß Paretz gefunden – gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann, König Friedrich Wilhelm III. von Preußen und ihren 10 Kindern.
Sie trat Napoleon nach dessen Besetzung Preußens entschieden entgegen und bestärkte ihren Ehemann vehement darin, gegen die französische Besatzung mobil zu machen.
Auch in Erinnerung an Luise stiftete Friedrich Wilhelm III. im Zuge der Erhebung zu den Befreiungskriegen das „Eiserne Kreuz“ als Tapferkeitsorden, das jedem Soldaten unabhängig vom gesellschaftlichen Stand oder Herkunft verliehen wurde.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel führte die Reinzeichnung des Ordens aus.
